My Justification Of My Game Idea

Rhys Williams Justification

The idea that we want to use is the game idea 1 for our main project as we have actually been thinking about the horror ( Old Rain ) for about a year and we all like the idea of making a horror game as we want to be a open world game and one of the gods from the film will walk around the area looking for jack while the player will try and run and hide from him and try to find fuel to get to his truck to escape. Another reason why we want to make this idea is because there are endless ideas coming to us on how the characters are going to look and we can focus on the environment a lot more and the movement of the game and how to really scare the player. Our targets for this game is to get this project finished by June and we considered the other three options but it was the horror game that we wanted to make and the potential that we can have is unlimited. The second idea of a action game tempted me cause we could make it a third person fighting game because we are being taught about third person more than first but to be honest we wanted a challenge because as a group we believe that we are very capable of making a game with the first person element to it and we really like the idea of a horror game so we can make the game more immersive for the player and just make a good quality game. The third idea of a 2D game would've just been a bit of a pain to do so all in all the first game seemed like the best option for me and for the rest of the group

Unit 73 for Computer Games Understanding Sound Theory

Unit 73 for Computer Games
Understanding Sound Theory
By Rhys Williams

In the newly released game Friday The 13th which is based around the film Friday The 13th it uses in general a all around creepy background music with the iconic creepy piano playing ad the violins playing when the killer catches a player and kills him. the game uses iconography and also uses symbolic sound/ music in the game and they are very noticeable when you listen to the game. First of all the game uses symbolic music quite a few times in the game for example when the main bad guy Jason follows a player who is running away the music intensifies and the tone and pitch rises as the player realises from this music that the killer is close or even behind them. also the game uses iconography by using a heart beat when you are hiding from the killer. if the killer is close to you then the heartbeat gets louder if the killer is far away then it starts to get quite. this is iconic because it was also originated from the old horror films including Friday The 13th.

In the game Metal Gear Solid the game uses symbolic sounds to indicate what is happening. the main one is when you are snake sneaking around the level and you see a body guard and he sees you then a big explanation mark comes up above his head and plays a high pitched retro violin to tell the player that you have been spotted by a guard also in the game when the player hasn't moved in a while maybe not knowing where to go the character in the game will give a hint to the player of what to do giving information about how to carry on with the game.

Sonic The Hedgehog      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4LnygjLhvc

Sonic The Hedgehog is a game that is all about the symbolic sound effects that are used multiple times in the game. when sonic jumps the game makes a jumping noise and the when sonic rolls it makes a kind off saw noise but more retro sounding and the main sound of the game is when sonic gets points by collecting gold rings which is used throughout the game and is the most iconic sound when it comes to sonic the hedgehog so it is using iconography as after sonic most games starting using more of these noises/sounds. tho Mario had started the journey with the iconic coin sounds it was sonic the hedgehog and SEGA to make

Unit 73: sound for computer games Aims/: To Understand Sound Design Theory

Unit 73: sound for computer games
Aims/: To Understand Sound Design Theory
P1
A: listen to 5 songs/ music that have been used I games

1: The Mario theme tune/ super Mario bros
The Mario theme tune has been used for years starting with the first game of Mario in September 13th 1985 and the mood of the music is generally happy and adventures to try and get the player into the right mood for the game as it is for the whole family. The music is usually all happy and joyful and creates a happy and joyful atmosphere but when you get to a boss level of into bowsers castle the music changes to give the player an intense atmosphere and an evil mood as bowser is the bad guy. At the end of the levels Mario climbs a flag pole and enters a castle. When he does it the music lightens up and is a triumphs victory music.

2: Call of Duty Zombies Map Moon Soundtrack
The soundtrack of the call of duty zombie’s map moon is a game where four characters teleport to the moon which has been infected by zombies in a space centre based on the moon. This soundtrack made by avenged seven hold called nightmare is perfect for the game because it starts of quite spooky which is what you want when you are playing a zombie game as it adds a horror atmosphere to the game. Then the soundtrack intensifies the game by adding a rock effect to it which is also perfect for the game as what you do in the game is find loads of weapons and your main objective is to survive from the wave of zombies which since the soundtrack is rock it gives the player adrenaline to carry on and play the game.

3: Pac-Man Main Tune
The game Pac-Man was released in October in 1980 and is an iconic game not only for the game but also for the iconic theme tune of the game as it makes the game a lot more fun to play even though it is a three second loop of the same repetitive tune on repeat till you die. The objective of this game is to be Pac-Man and you are to collect all the tokens without getting court by four ghosts who circle around the map to try and get you. The music makes just a joyful mood to the game but as you progress the same tune just gives you momentum to complete the game. It is aimed for all family’s and at the time that is was made it is now considered retro style of music.

4: The Last of Us soundtrack
The last of us is a game that was released by naughty dog and was released in 2013 and it is an incredible game now, of course, there is music in The Last of Us, but the music in the game is really just the sprinkles on top. The soundtrack uses just enough to invoke an atmosphere. The music works so well that sometimes, that you’ll find your pulse quickening without even realizing that a song has started playing. For example Joel’s “Focused Hearing” technique brings sound to the forefront in the game. As the player, you use sound as a sword and a shield, hiding from threatening noises, tossing bottles to divert guards’ attention to another direction and identifying positions of enemies you can’t see yet. It’s implemented into the gameplay smoothly and it works really, really well. There’s an eeriness about the game that just couldn’t be realized fully without the incredible sound design that Naughty Dog put into this game.

5: Turok
The soundtrack to the game Turok is more of a tribal atmosphere to the game as you are in a rain forest with dinosaurs and enemies as well so the music has to be intense and try to get the player to feel the games atmosphere and the music does quite well with it. As you get closer to danger the music starts getting faster and louder and intensifies the game for the player like one level you have to get through a gate and then a raptor shows up and blocks the door so you have to fight it, and the music turns in tribal music with the drums getting faster and louder which really notches up the intensity.

Subject Terminology

Waveform
A curve showing the shape of a wave at a given time. It is how we read the sound that is being made
Wavelength
The wavelength of a wave is the distance between a point on one wave and the same point on the next wave. It is often easiest to measure this from the crest of one wave to the crest of the next wave, but it doesn't matter where as long as it is the same point in each wave.
Amplitude
As waves travel, they set up patterns of disturbance. The amplitude of a wave is its maximum disturbance from its undisturbed position. Take care, the amplitude is not the distance between the top and bottom of a wave
Frequency
The frequency of a wave is the number of waves produced by a source each second. It is also the number of waves that pass a certain point each second.
Pitch
The pitch of a sound is the ear and brain interpreting the frequency of the sound. When there is a high frequency, the ear interprets the sound as a higher pitch, and when the frequency is low, the ear hears a low pitch.
Hertz
The hertz is the unit of frequency in the International System of Units and is defined as one cycle per second. It is named for Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, the first person to provide conclusive proof of the existence of electromagnetic waves.

Big Trouble in Little China Town assignment

Unit 74: Computer Game Story Development
Assessment 1 : Big Trouble in little China story elements

In this assignment i will be writing  a Report about the elements of a story within the film and answer the following questions.

Is Big Trouble in little China story elements originate from  a film or is it  from a book?
The story of big trouble in china town was originated from a small script about a cowboy named Jack Burton that was made in 1899 and the film used it and adapted it into the film but there have been comic books that have been taken from the film. The elements of the film of big trouble in little china town was actually inspiration  for 4 volumes of comic books and the comics have used this as bases for a start (volume 1 ) and a middle (volume 2,3) and a end (volume 4) the film starts with the introduction of Jack Burton and all the characters in the film and him and his friend (sub character) Wang goes to gets Wang's fiance Mao yin, the second volume is them getting to the airport and finding out that the china town gang has stolen wangs fiance and jack and Wang go to china town to try and get her back. volume 3 is continuing on from that and it starts at the white tiger when jack Burton and Wang get captured and learn about David Lo Pan and the three storms after which they learn that David Lo Pan wants Mao yin because of her green eyes as he made a deal with the devil and he needs to marry a woman with green eyes.

Who are the main characters

Image result for Jack Burton and Wang          Jack Burton is the main character and the main hero of the film as he thinks that he is amazing at fighting but in reality he is actually always on his back and it is Wang that does all the fighting for Jack but Jack always gets the credit  and the film is based mainly on him.

Wang is the Sidekick of the film as he is Jack Burton's friend and the reason he is the sidekick is because he helps Jack Burton to save Gracie and Mao Yin but is not  as involved in the film as much yes he does all the fighting for jack but it is mainly just fighting thugs or gang members when as Jack always fights the main people like Thunder and Lo Pan.

Image result for Lo Pan Lo Pan is the main villain in this film as he is the one who kidnaps Mao yin to marry her and then kidnaps Gracie as well which Jack eventually saves and then Lo Pan and Mr Egg Chen have a battle of magic and then Jack kills Lo Pan.

       Sub characters

Image result for Gracie big trouble
Image result for Gracie big trouble      Gracie is a Sub Character as she does not make a appearance till mid way through the start of the film and is kind off a Sub damsel in distress as Mao Yin is the main damsel in distress But then Gracie gets kidnapped as well and is really part of Jacks plot more than the actual Film.

Image result for egg chen

Egg Shen is a Sub Character because tho he starts the film it is him telling the story of Jack Burton and and he does help them near the end of the film but without him Jack and Wang would never have been able to save Mao Yin and Gracie.

Image result for the three stormsThe three storms ( Thunder, Rain, Lightning ) They disguise themselves as executives working on Lo-Pan's facade company. They are, respectively, Rain, Thunder and Lightning, and all of them possess control over certain parts of the weather .They are fought numerous times throughout the movie by the heroes Jack Burton and Wang Chi. Rain is the first to die, in a sword fight against Wang during Lo-Pan's wedding ceremony. Thunder commits suicide after Lo-Pan is killed by Jack, inflating into a large blob and exploding. Lightning is killed during the heroes escape, as he pursues them they drop a large statue on him.

Finally Mao Yin is a Sub Character because she is the damsel in distress or at least one of them and she is not really involved in the film but she is a main part of it as she is the goal of the movie which is to save her form David Lo Pan.

   Theme

The theme of “Big problem in little China town” is a fantasy action film which focuses on mainly Chinese martial arts and magic

Plot/Motivation/ Emotional theme
Image result for jack burtons truck

The plot of the main story is that jack and Wang have to save Mao yin and stop Lo Pan from ruling the universe. But the main story for Jack is that all he wants is his money from Wang and then also he wants his truck back, many people would think that he wanted the girl Gracie as well but he didn’t care about her. On the other hand there is the plot of Wang which is he must save his fiance Mao Yin from the evil Lo Pan. Lo Pans motivation is to try and marry Mao Yin as she is the only woman to have green eyes until meets Gracie and then kidnaps her to marry them both and sacrifice them to his god so he can become mortal again.

Relationships between the characters

The relationship between the the characters are that Wang and Jack Burton are old friends and the reason they are together in the film is because Wang owes Jack £1,140 and Wang has to go to the airport first and then everything happens. also the other reason that Jack Burton stays is because the gang that stole Mao yin also stole Jack Burton's truck. also Gracie and jack Burton's relationship is that they have a fling in the film and the film cleverly makes you think that the film will end with them two being together but in fact jack dosent care about Gracie as all he cares about is his money and his truck.

The Story Beginning/Middle/End

Intro
Starts with Mr Chen’s uterine asking Mr Chen about if he believes in magic and Mr Chen convinces him by making electricity come out of his hands.  After this it shows the main character Jack Burton and his old Chinese friend Wang playing cards and betting money and jack wins all the money. Afterwards Wang makes a bet for £1,140 and says he can chop a bottle in half. He does not and now Wang owes jack money but Wang must got to the airport first to pick a girl named Mao yin. When they get their gang from china comes in a takes Mao yin away and kidnaps her. So Jack and Wang chase the gang to china town where we cut on Mr Chen who a simple bus tour guide driver is showing the tourists around china town.  Then we cut to Jack and Wang in an alley way where jack and Wang are stopped by a group of peaceful martial artists on a memorial walk with a coffin. Little does Jack and Wang know that the martial artist enemies people in black clothing are about to challenge them to a Chinese standoff. After a giant battle the battle is stopped by what appears to be three wizards in giant sombreros known as the three storms. Wang and Jack get chased by the gang but get away. They find out that Wang’s fiance is Mao Yin and they have taken her to the white tiger to sell her for high prices.

Middle
Jack goes to the white tiger looking for Mao Yin to buy her back for Wang but gets attacked by one of the three storms whose name is apparently David Lo pan who takes Mao Yin before Jack can get to her. After wards jack and Wang go to the three storms lair to get Mao yin back. Unfortunately it does not work as they get captured by David Lo Pan who is an old man in a wheelchair who needs Mao Yin to become young again. After jack and Wang escape from David Lo Pan they go out to find the others who has been kidnapped by the gang. They get their friends and they get the girls who have been captured previously as well and then they run towards for the exit and as they run to the bus that Mr Chen has parked outside Gracie get captured by a monster in a secret door. As jack and Wang are escaping they realise that Gracie has been kidnapped so they get ready with more people to go back and save her. Lo Pan tells Gracie that she has kidnapped Mao Yin to marry her and become young again and now has captured Gracie because she also has green eyes and he plans to marry both woman if they survive the burning blade which they did.

End
Wang and Jack both make it to Lo pan's lair and they find out that the wedding is about to begin. They come to a stop when they find one of Lo Pan's body guards who has about ten eyes and whatever it sees then Lo Pan sees. They infiltrate the wedding and attack Lo Pan before he uses the needle of love to stab Mao Yin and become flesh. They stop this and jack Burton wait till he is mortal and then throws a knife at him misses then Lo Pan throws it back and then Jack catches it and then throws again and hits Lo Pan in the head and kills him. One of the three storms finds Lo Pan is dead and explodes out of anger. They escape the lair and the bad guys and they go back to Mr Wang’s restaurant and jack leaves everyone now he has got his truck back, which was all he wanted. As jack Burton is driving his truck back home we find
the monster that was supposedly dead is actually alive and has got onto jacks truck and then the film ends

assignment 1 Josh level 3 in Games Design

Level 3 in Games Design
Unit 78 Digital Graphics for Computer Games
Rhys Williams
Understand Theory an Application Used for Computer Game Graphics

For this assignment I will be comparing the theory and application of the computer game graphics for a 2D and a 3D computer game of my choice. The video games that I have chosen are my 2D game is Donkey Kong  and my 3D game will be FIFA 17.

Donkey Kong

File extensions

Image result for nes fileDonkey Kong  is an 8 bit game and was made to be played on the giant arcade machines and it really set the tone for arcade machines and donkey Kong so much that later on it would be made and compressed for the Nintendo entertainment system.  The Nintendo Entertainment system  and its file format is a NES file as all games that was made for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) are a NES file.  At that time in history Nintendo did not want other companies to share their files for the games so Nintendo made their own type of file extension to make sure no other company would take the games and make copies of it.

Artistic Style of Donkey Kong
Image result for classic donkey kong gameThe artistic  style of the game of Donkey Kong Country is a very well made pixel art game as in the game the artists who made the game have used 2D sprites to make the game. the entire game e.g the main characters Mario and Donkey Kong are simple 2D sprites and the objects e.g the hammer that Mario uses and the barrels that Donkey Kong throws are also in 2D pixel art. there was no vehicles in the game but the environment e.g the metal beams and the ladders that Mario had to climb up was also 2d pixel art.

Image result for donkey kong concept artConcept Art

As you can see in this image (concept art for Donkey Kong ) the artists who made Donkey Kong tried to base it of a drawing that they drew of a gorilla and they have used pixel art to create it into a pixel formed Donkey Kong. They tried to base the main characters movements like a real gorilla like the way he looks and he walks is just like a gorilla only child friendly as it was a family game.

Texture Art

Image result for classic donkey kong gameThe texture art in the game would probably be more focused on the metal beams and the ladders of the game as the creators have had to give the platforms a realistic look but they have had to keep to the 2D pixels art style. as you can see in the right  picture it shows the level of the classic Donkey Kong game and you can see the texture that they have put in the metal beams like the little triangles in the spacing of them that is to make them look like real beams but keep them in the same artistic style that they planned for. also the ladders they have just kept the texture to the ordinary looking ladders with two straight lines going up and straight lines going across too.

Background Art

To be perfectly honest the background art is just black and that's it. the game does have some occasional background shakes when Donkey Kong jumps in the air but that is it really on background art cause in the time that this game was made. background art in video games hadn't really progressed like it has today.

In Game Interference

Image result for HUD of classic donkey kongIn game interference is basically like a head up display ( HUD ) which gives you the information that you need to know in order to play the game. in the Donkey Kong game you have about three thing that was important to you  1 the score that you had was in the top of the screen and when you added to your score it would pop up with a little animation and it would float to the score in the top and add it up for you to give you and update your score. 2 was your lives so as you progressed through the levels you would start with 3 lives and if you git hit by a barrel then you would die and you would lose a life. And 3 was the bonus score. so if you would acquire the hammer then you became invincible to barrels and you would start gaining a score. in order to make the score bigger you had to hit more barrels. when your hammer ran out the score that you got for destroying barrels would light up and it would be called a bonus score and that like the normal score would add to the high score at the top of the screen.

Print Media

Image result for donkey kong arcade machinePrint media is the way to sell the game to make it known to the audience that your looking for and letting them play the game and get more money from it. The Donkey Kong games print media would be the posters that they advertised and the giant arcade machines. this image represents the art that used to be on the arcade machines. this and a occasional advert on TV and posters on windows was the way to advertise this game and since the game is so popular as nearly everyone has played it it obviously worked.

Raster Image
Image result for arcade donkey kong
In game graphics raster images is mainly rectangular pixels or points of colour view able by a monitor. this game does use many raster images as the art style are raster images as they are 2D sprites which use rectangular pixels.

Game Graphics for FIFA 17

Artistic Style of fifa 17

the artistic style of fifa 17 is definitely photo realism as EA and Frostbite have tried to make the game as real as possible so the player can feel like they are actually playing football. fifa 17 is so realistic that they actually use real footballers faces to make animations of players emotions by using a face scanning process called the star head thread. the star head thread is when EA producers ask real footballers to come into EA company and let them scan their face in all different angles to capture the image of there facial expressions and put them into the game and make it as realistic as possible. in the game EA have optimized to make this game as realistic and to give the user a real feeling of what it is like to be a footballer and to make the sport a lot more fun by letting the player play the game how they want to.
there are 3 types of faces in the fifa 17 game

1. Scanned
this image shows a famous football player ( Paul Pogba ) in the process of the face scanning for the new fifa 17. this will capture all of the facial features including his eye movements and also it will capture his hair patterns on his head. the picture below is in game footage of Paul Pogba as a game character and as you can tell it is as photo realistic as possible.

Image result for paul pogba face scanImage result for paul pogba face scan

 2. Star head
Image result for messi in fifa 17
Star head is when EA send a team to watch a certain players movements and facial features and take pictures of them and transport and compress them files into the game and optimize for a good attempt of a gaming replica of that certain player. the image below is a picture of the most iconic football player Leoniel Messi and this is the captured image of Messi running in a game and what they have done is they have taken a picture of it and they have transferd it into the game.

3. Generic
when a player has a in game face that is based on the,m but has not gone into to much detail. this is a image of as football player named Naingolan who has a in gamer face that has not really been taken seriously and the picture is a real picture of Naingolan and you can see that there are some simularites in the two but not really as much as other players.
Image result for nainggolan fifaImage result for nainggolan fifa

Background Art
Image result for background of fifaThe background of fifa 17 is actually beautiful and they have used some amazing texture art and photo realism and it is mainly the backgrounds is the stadiums and the crowds in the football stadium.as you can see in this image this football stadium is so realistic you would think it is a photo graph of a real football stadium. they have also added very good animations of the crowd moving up and down some are standing some are sitting down and when you score you can see the camera shaking and the fans jumping up and down so it feels like you are actually there in the stadium.

In-Game Interference
Image result for HUD of fifaThe In- Game interference of fifa 17 is not like other games when it shows you lives and score but it actually relates to football so stamina and power meter so how hard your shot/ pass was and of course the score and the time remaining in each half of the match. it also gives you the name and the kit number of the player that you are and the player that the other team is.

Print Media
The difference between games like Donkey Kong in the old days and FIFA 17 in now a days is that there is a lot more ways to use print media in order to sell the game and advertise it. there is now the game case itself as you see below that is print media and there is also more posters that can be put on the internet which everyone uses now a days.

Gaming History - Consoles

level 3 in games design unit 20 computer game platform and technology

Gaming Machines

Arcade Machines

Arcade Machines are the old school version of the Xbox 1 and the PS4 and it actually came out a long long time before these new consoles did.
the first coin operated video game was Galaxy Game and it was made in 1971 at Stanford university in September. galaxy game cost 1 quarter as it was made in America and it was a quarter for 3 games the game then with the machine cost $20,000 back then but now its inflation cost $115,000 which is a bit of a increase in price . Though this was the first game ever made for arcade machines the first commercially successful coin operated video game was the classic game "Pong" which was released in 1972 and it sold around 35,000 units. after pong all of the company's well 15 of them started making video games like PAC Man and space invaders and Donkey Kong and all the classics.

consoles

games consoles are very different to arcade machines as arcade machines can only function one working game or rarely even two games while games console now a days can play as any games as you want no at once but there are a unlimited amount of games for the new consoles and there are still loads more being developed. the first functional games console that was made was in 1967 with "The Brown Box " with the  games of pong and volleyball and chase games and a light gun game. then in 1977 Atari introduced the world to the first joystick that was compatible with a games console with the Atari 2600. travelling to 1978 and games consoles was looking very strange a prime example of this is the Coleco Telstar Arcade (1978)  then in 1983 the games company SEGA decided to make there first game console called SEGA SG 1000 followed by the game company Nintendo making there first console of the Nintendo entertainment system which was a revolutionary console for Nintendo. the most common consoles now are the play-stations and the Xboxes which started in 1994 with the very first instalment from Sony with the Playstation 1 with classic games like Crash Bandicoot and  Tom Clancy's rainbow six. and then in 2000 they made a second addition called the Playstation 2 with great games like Battlefront 2 and resident evil. finally Xbox came in with the Xbox in 2001 which started the battle with Sony and Xbox which to be honest Sony was winning until Xbox in 2005 made the Xbox 360 which took over Sony's Playstation  in my opinion. now in 2016 you have the next gen consoles of Xbox 1 and PS4 and now they are both very even in the terms of better console.

PC

The amount of time i have heard people who play PC who have called them The Master Race and as much as i hate them for it i can kind off see where they are coming from. the benefits of a PC is that you can do a lot more than you can do with a games console as they have their limits but to be fair to a PC you can change the limits and you can improve the game play of a video game massively by buying a better graphics card which improves the graphics of a PC as the processor of a computer cannot contain 3D files like photos and games which is where the graphics card comes in which is made to produce 3D quality  so all the games that PC players play they all need a decent graphics card to even think about playing good games. The first main graphics card in my opinion was the
Monochrome Display Adaptor which was made in 1981 and it didn't actually produce 3D quality so some people wouldn't call it a Graphics card but it still let the monitor produce videos so it still did something. OK so the main graphics card that actually did make produce 3D functions is iSBX 275 which was the first graphics card to produce game functions on the PC which was in the times of gaming in the 1980s so it was quite revolutionary. now we have graphics cards like the Nvidia Ge Force 1080. GTX graphics cards harness the power of groundbreaking gaming technology including GPU Boost, to deliver outstanding performance. GTX delivers the most intense performance and broad feature set for users who demand the very best. Play the latest games at blistering frame rates with extreme special effects. as a conclusion the limitations of the PC world back then was making 3D images and content. now the limitations of PC is well unlimited if you have the right amount of money. i guess in a sense a limitation is money because being able to play video games on pc is very expensive

Mobile

Image result for Hagenuk MT-2000, tetrisFIRST MOBILE GAME - TETRIS Tetris appeared as the first mobile game in 1994 aboard the Hagenuk MT-2000, a phone designed and manufactured in Denmark by the Hagenuk corporation. Tetris is the wildly popular video game based on rapidly stacking tetranomial shapes. three years later Nokia in December 1997 created the worldly known Snake which is a game where you start off as a little snake and you gradually eat food to grow your snake but you are not aloud to touch the walls or yourself. this game revolutionised Nokia so much that Nokia actually installed the game on every Nokia phone they made. now a days the main competitors for mobile gaming are made from Apple and Android. there are a massive variety of games like fps and platformers and now they are in development on making Super Mario Brothers from the Nintendo Wii on to the mobile phone. the limitations on the mobile phone is mainly it does not have enough storage and memory to hold good quality games on there phone so you wont be seeing call of duty any time soon on your phone. also the ways that you interact with the phone back then you only had a d pad of up, down, left and right . but now you have a touch screen so you can ave more variety of games to play
